Royston: The majority of businesses close within three to five years, and to know that I am still here after 15 years, it's God because I've made so many mistakes and I just can't believe I survived. Courier Journal: What does it mean to have reached 15 years with your own publishing company? The following answers have been edited for length and clarity. The Courier Journal sat down with Royston to talk about her career as a publisher as it celebrates 15 years in business. "My dad always taught us that the gifted will never be broke a day in your life, as long as you have a gift, and an amount you can charge for that gift … you should never be broke a day in your life," Royston said. One is focused on children's books, faith books, and family-friendly content, while the focuses on more mature subjects, including Sci-Fi and mystery. Royston, an author turned publisher, runs two distinct publishing companies. A woman on a mission to incorporate more representation and diversity through her writing into the publishing world, Royston sees her role as a "gift." Today, Royston is celebrating 15 years in the publishing industry, where she is one of the roughly 5% of Black publishers nationwide, according to a study done by Lee & Low Books, an independent publishing company. Her career as an author launched, but she soon realized she had the skills, and desire, to start her own publishing company, which she had turned into a more than decade-long career. As she moved forward with her life, she kept dragging around the boxes of her writings. In 2007, Royston decided to turn her journals into a book of poetry and got published. While balancing her divorce and school workload, she wrote, and wrote, and wrote, filling a seemingly endless number of spiral notebooks.
